CIBC World Markets is predicting big things for Aug. 24.

The Alberta land sale that day is poised to be among the largest - if not the largest - on record, and should reveal how badly oil and gas companies want land positions in the emerging Duvernay shale gas play, research analyst Jeremy Kaliel said in an interview.

"It could be the biggest one we've seen this year," Kaliel said of the endof-month, oil-and-gas drilling rights auction, which will offer more than 285,000 hectares.

If Kaliel is right, the provincial government would bring in more than the record $842 million it netted on an auction at the beginning of June on drilling rights for 271,000 hectares - much of which is said to be targeting deep formations in central Alberta, largely the Duvernay.

Secret winning bids for the June sale have come to light as companies boast about their positions in the Duvernay, including big players EnCana Corp. and Talisman Energy Inc.

Encana said recently it now holds 146,000 hectares in the Duvernay and Talisman said it paid $510 million in the June land sale for Duvernay rights - or 60 per cent of the total cash put down. Companies put up a steep average successful bid price of $3,100 per hectare in the early summer sale.

The Duvernay is a vast, deep formation that has been a prolific source rock for oil and gas that's flowed from shallower vertical wells for years. It is now the "flavour of the month," according to Kaliel, who predicts the shale, which is said to be liquids-and potentially oil-rich, could become one of the biggest plays in Canada, comparable to the Horn River basin's Muskwa shale in British Columbia.

"Hold on to your hats," Kaliel said, arguing that after the end-of-summer land sale, firms will have less reason to stay quiet about their land positions, since much of the most prospective acreage will have been scooped up.

"By the end of the year here or at least into 2012, we're going to see more in the way of drilling results, rather than just speculation on land."

So far, there are only two producing wells in the Duvernay.

Kaliel bets the late-August sale will be dominated by firms already active in the Kaybob region of Alberta, where most drilling into the Duvernay has taken place and where nearly 1,000 sections are posted for bid.

That includes Talisman, Encana, Celtic Exploration Ltd. and Trilogy Energy Corp., as well as maybe Athabasca Oil Sands Corp., Tourmaline Oil Corp., Angle Energy Inc., Yoho Resources Inc. and Daylight Energy Ltd., Kaliel said.

"The question is, what do they bid? That's the million-dollar question."
